Star Wars Communication

Blog from Robyn P.:
Marital communication is so very interesting. Several years ago, when we were young in our marriage, we had a night of blissful communication. Well almost, we were lying in bed and had just had a long deep conversation about some issue related to our child (only one at that time). We both had shared our feelings and expressed our concerns. Eventually we came to a lull in the conversation, an obvious time for more personal reflection and deeper analysis of what we were talking and thinking about. At least, that is what I thought we had come to! This is where the interesting part of marital communication and expectations comes in. As I lay there, silently reflecting on the issue, I was sure that my husband was also deep in the same thought world.

After a short time, I cautiously questioned (so not to too abrubtly disrupt his thoughts) him…”Honey, what are you thinking about?”. Is this not the most classic early marital question that a wife so affectionately asks her husband? The response that I received was certainly not classic nor was it expected. My considerate and honest husband hesitated for a brief moment and then breathed out the words “Star Wars”. That was it, the ultimate example of woman to man conversation and thought…I am lingering on the deep topic that we had just discussed, still expecting the conversation to continue on an even deeper level, and he has moved on to Star Wars. Perhaps to him, the conversation did move on to something deeper?

To this day, I always get the same response to that question. We usually have a good laugh and then I move on to a clearer question that truly asks for the response that I am looking for. Yes, marital communication is very interesting and full of suprise.
